ways to add a sump

hi i have just setup my saltwater aquarium, i currently have two black oscellaris clownfish and a coral banded shrimp. i am running a cannister filter but have been reading up on the advantages of having a sump. just wondering if there is a way to drill the glass without tearing down the tank? also i was advised not to go for a hang on back style overflow system and would like to avoid them if possible. any and all responses will be greatly appreciated

drop the level and drill through the sides.

so if i drill it without emptying it i have to drill into the side of the glass and not the back?

Do you have room behind the tank to get a drill and bit back there? If so, you can drill the back of the tank. There MAY be more risk of breakage drilling a tank with water in it, I don't have the kahunas to do that. I've only drilled empty tanks.

I drilled a 90 while full on the side with the 'drop the water level below the hole' method. If I had wanted the hole on the back, I think that would have worked too. The worst part is really really hoping it's not tempered. If it is, you're completly screwed. I also agree, sounds like an increased risk of breakage if full.
