Brookstock Tank sizing question

Hi Guys,

I'm planning my home breeding system and will like to start with the Amphiprion Species. Understand most Amphiprion will be fine with a 10Gallon tank. Thus my question, will it be better to have a 1.5ft (L) x 1ft (W) x 1ft (H) tank or 1ft (L) x 1ft (W) x 1.5ft (H) tank. Not too sure if the fishes will prefer a bigger surface area or deeper tank.

Any advice?

Hi JC,

I suppose you are referring to the smaller amphiprion species like ocellaris & perculas? These fish do not really need height. 1ft height is enough for them. A black ocellaris pair of mine breeds in 20cm of water.

Maybe something around 20 gallons with 1ft depth minimum. Clarkiis are rather big fish.

For larger clowns I currently have Clarkiis spawning in a 15g (24"x12"x12"), Tomatoes in a 20g (24"x12"x16") and had Maroons in a 22g (24"x18"x12")

Thanks for sharing your setup, Eric. Helps alot. One option that I'm thinking is to setup 20Gallon brookstock tanks with partitions. Thus if I need the extra space for bigger species, I can remove the partition.

Need some advice on the spacing needed for each level with my tank.Currently, I've plan to have around 15cm spacing from tank top. Is that enough space to feed and etc?



Also need advice if I should use 3/4" piping or 1"? My tanks are ~11GGallon and 18Gallon.

15cm would surely work. I have about 45cm open space above mine, and still would like more So it depends on which is more important to you, saving space, or ease of use. The tighter you pack them in, the more of a pain in the but it is to remove pots/siphon/all the things you don't think of.

Thanks Scott. I do have some space constraint. Not only the height but the length and width too. Still reluctant to tear down my 5.5ft main tank.

Btw, any idea if 3/4" piping will do the trick to achieve around 6-8 turn-over? Based on my research, 3/4" can achieve ~ 10GPM. Just want to be sure.

I'm not sure exactly what all the details are. What pump are you running? Theirs a great table in Hoff's clown fish book if you have that, for pvc information.
