Growing on brine shrimp

I've never done them in a tank, just a 1 gallon container. Tell you what, I'll run up to brineshrimpdirect today, get some live ones from them, put them in a container with food and take a picture for you.

I wish I knew what I wasn't telling you, because I really just dump them in a container and they grow to adults. I've got some in containers right now that are so nasty that I can barely see them. I'll just run and take a picture of them right now.

Here are pictures I just barely took. And just so you know, I'm really not trying to grow these for any particular reason, I just dump them in containers because I have extra nauplii and don't know what to do with them. I will syphon them out and feed them to my fish just for a treat once in a while.

This is usually the size of container that I put them in. These bs have been in here for at least 3-4 months or more. There are a few smaller ones in there that I didn't put in there so they have obviously had a few live babies recently.



The only reason I am attaching this next picture is to compare the container next to the brine shrimp container. The brine shimp container needs food now. The container next to it just got fed last night. It has rotifers in it, but it's the same concept.



Now this picture, I definitely debated on posting because it's a little embarrasing. This is usually what I do with left over nauplii. I just leave them in the container that I syphoned them into in the first place. I forget to top them off and the water gets really nasty. This container has been around longer than I can remember, probably 6+ months. It used to have more brine shrimp in it, but there are 4 left in the container now. This is why I can't understand DrHsu's comment because I just can't kill these guys. They eventually die of old age.

Das ist gewoehnlich so ein Behaelter, in den ich sie tue. Diese BS sind seit 3-4 Monaten in diesem Behaelter oder laenger. Da sind auch ein paar kleinere bei, die ich da nicht rein getan habe. D. h. sie hatten kuerzlich Nachwuchs.

Der einzige Grund, dass ich das naechste Bild zeige, ist um einen Vergleich zu zeigen zwischen dem Behaelter daneben und dem Behaelter mit den Artemia. Der ArtemiaBehaelter braucht jetzt Futter. Der Behaelter daneben wurde letzte Nacht gefuettert. Da sind Rotifer drin, aber das Konzept ist das gleiche.

Dieses Bild jedoch, da war ich mir nicht sicher, ob ich es wirklich zeigen wollte. Es ist etwas peinlich. Das ist was ich gewoehnlich mit den uebrig gebliebenen Nauplii mache. Ich lasse sie einfach in dem Behaelter, in den sie sie am Anfang getan habe. Ich vergesse, ihn aufzufuellen und das Wasser wird wirklich ekelig. Den Behaelter gibt es schon laenger, als ich mich erinnern kann. Vermutlich ueber 6 Monate. Nornalerweise sind da mehr Brachionus drin. Im Moment sind nur 4 uebrig. Darum kann ich DrHsu's Kommentar nicht verstehen. Ich kann diese Viecher nicht toeten. Sie sterben irgendwann an Altersschwaeche.

Es braucht dir doch nicht peinlich sein
Wir alle lernen und man kann das meiste lernen aus eigenen Erfahrungen.
Ich habe auch so ein verkeimten Behälter aber es ist mir nicht peinlich ihn zu zeigen.
Dieser steht schon über 2 Jahre unter einer Lampe ohne Belüftung ohne Futter ohne Wasserwechsel.
Nur Frischwasser auffüllen aber erst wenn keine Artemia mehr lebt.



Der eigendliche Sinn war eine Sicherung von der deutschen Art Artemia salina zu mache da man kaum noch Zysten bekommt.



Dieser Wechsel der Bedingungen hat enorm die Dauerzysten produktion angekurbelt.
Nun kann ich auch Zysten ernten die ich dann eingefriere.
Das die Produktion nicht viel abwirft ist klar aber die Art lebt weiter.
Wenn das Wasser verdunstet und der Wasserstand sinkt kann man die Zysten schön mit einen Löffel ernten.



Eine ertragreiche Artemiaproduktion funktioniert nur mit bestimmten lebenden Algen.

Mit 5l braucht man nicht erst anzufangen.





Nur so überleben 99% der Nauplien.
Und man hat saubere Artemias die auch vom Inhalt her gut sind.

Just add fresh water but only after all the artemia are dead.

The real reason behind it was to secure a source of the german kind for making artemia salina out of the cysts because they are hard to come by.

This change of the environment has increased the cyst production a lot.
Now I am able to harvest cysts which I then keep in the freezer.
The production does not yield a lot but it keeps the variety alive.
When the water evaporates and the water level gets lower it is easy to scrape the cysts off with a spoon.

To produce artemia cysts successfully you need certain types of living algae.

It is useless to get started with 5l.

This is the only way for 99% of the nauplii to survive.
And you have clean artemia with a good food base.

What are the large plastic bags full of algae or brine shrimp?
Are the bags sealed?

I'm beggining to see a pattern forming here & it has to do with Live Algae as I am only feeding Reed's Instant algae I may have to start a culture up a LOT sooner than I thought I would.

I never use live algae, at least it's not guaranteed to be. I have actually started a live algae culture from it when I first buy it, so it's pretty fresh. I use glycerin-free nannochloropsis paste from BSD.

I think you may of hit the nail on teh head with respect to the state of my algae.

I started using the other portion of the bottle that I had frozen som 8 months ago & ther is a HUGE difference in colour! its actually BRIGHT green were as the stuff I had been using is a very very dark green.

I'll empty & scrub the tank out & try try again.

Ich habe angefangen den anderen Teil der Flasche zu verwenden, den ich vor etwa 8 Monaten eingefroren habe und die farblich unterscheiden sie sich sehr stark. Es ist hellgrün wärend das was ich zuvor verwendet habe sehr sehr dunkel grün ist.

Ich werde das Becken leeren, säubern und es nochmal versuchen.

I can quite happily say I have managed to grow out brine shrimp!

All I had to do was attempt to culture algae


I tried culturing some T-Iso from a mate & it wasn't getting any denser so I left it, about a week and a half later I noticed 'floaties' in teh bottles, on closer look they were brine shrimp, so I left them. When I pulled the bottles today I have adult brine shrimp (many many with egg sacks).

Its a pity as I could really REALLY do with the T-Iso instead of the brine shrimp lol.
