Pool micro algae ID

Postby VBMikr » Thu May 15, 2014 7:57 am

Hi- I'm new to culturing algae and since I've started doing it myself, I tend to notice it everywhere I see it... ponds, ditches, etc. :)

Over the winter, my saltwater pool has turned brown. :? I understand that the salt concentration in a swimming pool is no where near that of sea water, but is this a saltwater Isochloropsis? I guess the questions are how do I ID it and is it worth trying to cultivate? ...since it turns out that I'm already really good at cultivating it hahaha

Thanks

Welcome! :D
Of course you can start cultures of feral algae as a science project or for your pleasure.
But if you plan to use algae for larviculture, you should stick to the few advised species and start with pure registered cultures.

Thanks. That should read 'isochrysis' not 'isochloropsis', sorry.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback!
