Antennarius maculatus / Warty Frogfish (Clown Frogfish)

Image

This is the female, I have yet to get a shot of the much smaller and elusive male. I have been perusing the http://www.frogfish.ch/index.html website to attempt to identify this small creature, and there are many, many different species of this genus, so I could easily be wrong. The photo above fits the basic A maculatus characteristics of size, a lure which is about twice as long as the second dorsal spine and round, darker spots but no stripes. And, of course, warts.

Here is her lure showing:

And here it is flat on her head:

Eeewwww... :)

Frogfish are becoming popular for some reason but every one I see sold around here is doomed, they don't seem to eat the flakes everyone sprinkles on the water surface. Not exactly a beginner's fish, but it's beginners that seem to want them. :(

Hideous? Well, beauty is in the eye of the kid looking though the glass. This is one of the favorite fishes in our aquarium!

I think she is darling!

These two eat frozen food, and we have had them a while. I am just glad she didn't eat him!

Here is the egg raft I floated in a critter keeper for a day or so.

Hey Suzy, are there any defining characteristics between the sexes? Or did you just have to wait for them to spawn to find out?

I tried splitting the raft and putting a smaller mass in the smaller kreisal. That kriesal is really open and the phytoplankton clears quickly. But, so does in the big one. There are zillions of ciliates and pods and creepy looking microscopic crab things.

Like a bazillion ciliates, tiny pods and tiny crab things? Tell me what the second thing is in this vid? The first are ciliates, the second creature is who knows what, and the third is gravid..

I have seen the first and the last of these three, but that second one is weird....

These are all microscopic. I can't see them with my own eyeballs.

Good or bad? Could a tiny larva eat it or be eaten by it?

That/s it! A ciliate that walks! Very cool.

Sorry I missed this post!

With our pair, the male is much, much smaller. From what I have read about this species, it is hard to get a pair to live together because the female often eats the male! The boss was sure she would eat him, but they keep her well fed, and they have been together for 2 years now. It is really good she is making eggs now, because these fish are really slow metabolizers. They literally rarely even move!

The male is rarely seen. He just hides. So this shot is the best I can do of them together.

Image

Here is his reflection on the glass. He is about one half, or a third her size.

Image

So, 3 rafts so far, no hatch...I talked the boss into leaving the next one in the tank and see if it hatches. The parents are not protecting them, fanning them or even seem to notice them, but maybe moving them or the car ride to my home is too stressful for tiny frogfish eggs?

I can't find any real research on breeding these. Some anecdotal reports from years ago, some "I heard a guy somewhere raised them" but nothing concrete.

Luis, I talked about that with the other aquarists. Could it be the "goo" around the eggs attracts their fish food in the wild?

I don´t think so,Suzy.Almost all pelagic larvae feed on plankton organisms. What you see are benthic scavenging ciliates.

I am not sure where to go from here...

There is literally nothing in Google scholar that helps.

Nowhere, other than keep waiting for a fertile spawn and you get larvae to raise
Which will be small and tough.I don´t think they were ever raised. :?

There is no recorded anything. One guys got some kudos in drum and croaker for proving their "FECUNDITY"....

in 2006.

sigh.....

Maybe in the new aquarium we can put a webcam on the tank and see if the male is even involved...

I thought I did. I will peruse it again....and again... and again!

The pair have been seen doing a weird courtship, but I wonder if the male is too young?
