removing label and glue from platic jar

What chemical is safe to use? I have two plastic jars that were given to me that will be perfect as culture jars and for seahorse fry, but I don't want to keep the labels. The only thing that comes to mind is using a small amount on acetate on the outside and rinsing well.

Fill with warm water and slowly pull the label off. That usually works well for me.
Alternately soak the whole jar in warm water (hot if it will not distort the jar).

GoGone or however you spell it. Just wash it well afterwords. I use it all the time and it never causes any issues.

Thanks. I'll give them both a try. I went ahead and put the erectus that were born today in one of the jars and they are working great. I love the kiesel effect. I have to agree with rayjay on how handy these are. Thanks for the help!
