Discussion Ideas

Postby Amie » Wed Jun 03, 2009 5:23 pm

Great idea Christian. I can think of quite a few topics I'd love to see discussed, mostly because I'd like to know what other people have learned from experience, not from books. For example, raising clownfish. Most of us have probably read The Clownfish Book, but I'd love to hear how people have deviated from her methods to get higher survival rates. I think Marianne Williams says 20% survival is good, but I know a lot of people here get better results than that.

Other ideas:
  • What is the basic method for raising 'anything' that spawns in your tank. If you are starting out with a species that's never been tried before, where do you start? What would be the most common way to begin in order to figure out how to raise something new? For example: do you always try to feed them rotifers first, then brine shrimp? That seems to be the common approach for most fish, at least.
  • What's the best way to keep documentation/records when experimenting with a new species?
  • What are different ways of catching larvae in your tank?
  • What are the different/effective ways to keep things in suspension? Including different ways to keep fungus under control?
  • Different methods for raising rotifers, brine shrimp, copepods, amphipods, etc. which way is most effective?
  • Shipping live...best way to do it to ensure that they are alive when they arrive?

I could come up with about 20 more, but I'll stop with those. ;)

I kind of figured they would all be different threads. I was just throwing out suggestions, you don't need to use all of them. But if you ever run out of ideas, I have plenty of them.

Don't you just throw them in a tank and feed them? Oh...I guess I should wait for the thread. ;)
