OT: Hopper fun!

OT: Hopper fun!

Postby "Umm, fish?" » Tue Oct 06, 2009 11:49 pm

I was out picking what are likely to be the last ( :( ) Thai chiles of the year, and I found this little dude hiding and sleeping on one of the chiles. PLUS, it was cold enough that this little guy wasn't going anywhere fast. It's too bad that I didn't have a chance to set up the tripod 'cause this would have been the perfect opportunity for some focus-stacking fun. At any rate, I hope you enjoy!

Magnification of 1:1 (well, a little more than that because of the small sensor in my camera):

Magnification of 2-2.25:1 (same disclaimer):

And here's a crop and zoom of that last one:

As an aside: See, I would _never_ have believed that I ever needed to look up a grasshopper's nostril. Obviously, I was wrong.

Nice pics Carl ! I don't know how hard a fly would be to find for you guys. But I think a really close up shot of a fly would be super sexy. :D Praying mantis are always outside here these days. They would also be really cool and creepy. And don't forget about snails !!!!!!

Nice photos, Carl! A lot more naturalistic than my "hopper on a chile pepper." :)

And just for you, Amy:

That guy was on my ceiling when I was taking its picture. You can imagine the setup.

And snails:

We now need a worm !!!!! I think it will be the sexiest .........with a little bit of dirt in the picture. And maybe sepia toned for extra creepy effect :D
But it is now my old Coral Croucher that I'm most looking forward to seeing ! I can see him now against a white background 8) How can one man have so much talent ?????

I'm not sure I understand Angel's obsession with "sexy insects" ;)

LMAO ! I just have a nasty habit of using the word sexy too much. And thanks to Edgar I now can say it in Spanish too ! But fwiw insects are sexy and I stand by that statement  And Andy's pics are sexy as well. :) Ok now back to work.

You know, I don't think I've ever taken a picture of a worm. That seems strange. I also never shot a preying mantis or a dragonfly (dragonflies are tough). Lots of spiders and beetles and whatnot, though.

This is one of my favorites, though. Here's a dandelion seedhead.

Image

I didn't even notice when I took the shot, but there are two insects in a knock-down, drag-out, locked-jaw battle on the one little seed head.

I can´t imagine what Ed might have told you  but we say sexy in Spanish and I guess in most other languages. Some words are just impossible to translate without fading their unique spice!

Don't worry Luis I was being silly  He told me it was sexy fwiw  I'm a very silly girl and I've tried to warn everyone. It comes from lack of sleep. And I do think a worm would make a cute picture. Everyday I have to chop earthworms up into bite size pieces for baby eastern box turtles. I guess I've just gotten use to them and don't see them as that creepy anymore.

Very nice....I was looking for a half-day worth of Dragon-fly shots I took in Colorado. Can't find them at the moment, have to get back if one turned out. :D

Nice Carl! We had a bunch of them around here this summer (a wet year for us), but I never saw them at the same time I had a camera available.
