Spawning Serranus tigrinus

Spawning Serranus tigrinus

Postby Luis A M » Wed Jul 18, 2012 6:10 pm

I keep a couple of them, the smaller one remains hidden most of the time, but when it shows there is no agression between them.
Few nights ago,I found some few eggs.Developing embryos show more pigmentation that Centropyge:

And they take longer to develope, here a hatching egg at 48hrs,see the tail protruding out over the oil vacuole:

Luis,
Do you have any update on these? Were you successful with the larvae? Have they spawned again? I'm thinking about setting some of these up so any info/advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark

I ended up getting lantern bass instead. Good luck with the harlequins! Such a sinister-looking fish but always one of my favorites.

2 DPH.The oil vacuole completed it´s migration forward.Rear gut is fully developed and the mouth is taking shape.Eyes are formed and pigmentation is beginning. There are some few small dark spots;other than that, the larva is mostly translucent.

Sometimes S.tigrinus eggs come mixed with C.loriculus eggs.
But they are easy to tell apart.Centropyge eggs are slightly smaller and hatch earlier than Serranus.Embryos and prolarvae show a dorsal dark pigmentation and a rear oil vacuole.S.tigrinus are clear, with yellow dots and the vacuole is in the front end.See the pics:
