kriesel for shrimp larvae

Postby lrood » Sun Apr 17, 2011 7:04 pm

Thought I'd post a video of the kriesel setup I used to raise my peppermint shrimp. I ended up keeping them in this until the first one settled. This is my first try at posting video...

Fixed ! You just need to use the code after "...watch?v=" ;)

Very cool! Could you walk me through your set-up? I'm new to breeding so I am not familiar with how a kriesel is set up.

That is a very interesting video. Just enough to wet my appetite.
I to would like a little more info about the setup. The kreissel looks like a standard 1 gallon glass tank with some unique accessories.
Please more information!

Sorry for the late reply - things have been really busy at work lately & not much free time. The setup is really simple. It is a standard 2 gallon fish bowl (bought at Petco, but available at many places). The only things in the bowl at the semi-rigid airline, a temp probe, and heater. The rectangular black pad on the back is left over from a "failed" experiment. It is a reptile habitat heater placed on the outside of the bowl's back surface . I thought it might be able to keep the temp warm enough, but never really seemed to do anything (hence the heater in the bowl). I did a 50% water change every other day with aged water from my main tank (run through a 53 micron filter).

I have set a fish bowl on top of a seed mat and it has worked well at keeping the water warm.

Thanks for posting your setup! I will have to go buy a couple of fish bowls today! Could you please share what temperature you keep them at, and what your feeding history is up until this point?

Oh, and just how the heck do all of you siphon water out for waterchanges without sucking up the larvae? I'm doing something wrong...

Plankton net over the end of the siphon hose works well for me.

John, you just pinch the hose when one gets stuck and he falls off? Doesn't get hurt? I will have to try it out.

I picked up a couple 2 gallon fish bowls today. Ok, shrimp get it on already! :D

The only problem with buying Goldfish Bowls is that everybody in the store looks at you like you are some kind of monster.

Even the checkout girl give you the 'You better not be planning to put a fish in that thing.' look.

Yes, Indeed!
Try buying 5 or 10 at a time, yikes!
I use those bowls for all sorts of breeding related things. Rotifers, Small batches of larvae, Copepod maintenance.....

The 2 gallon bowls are hard to find around here...1 gallon no problem. The only ones I could find were $27 each. Ouch! Good thing I grabbed a couple though because my boggessi is holding eggs today. :D I will try this method out.

3 gallon are at Pet Smart and some of the other big chains. I have seen them at Wal Mart but not recently.

Both Walmart and Petsmart only had 1 gallon fish bowls here. I only checked one Walmart though. Petcetera didn't have any fish bowls at all. Petland is where I found the 2 gallon bowls.

Look on the internet, like Ebay or Amazon. You can get a better deal, not a lot but some.

And yard sales!

I never even thought of checking the local fish classifieds...thought they would be easy to find and cheap! I will take these two back if I can find some used ones. =]

We have a local '"craigslist" classified that gets a lot of traffic. It seems you never see what you are looking for but see lots of things you want.

Do you have a thrift store?
