ORA is rearing and selling Peppermints now?

Postby mpedersen » Wed Jun 27, 2007 1:27 am

I think I got this right, apparently with the change in ownership/management ORA is now selling CB Peppermint Shrimps?

I've seen a huge influx of CB Peppermints at Chicago Area LFS's in the last month. If I recall correctly, one of the shop owners did say that they were ORA shrimps...? Supposedly ORA figured out some really easy way to rear them on a very large scale, thus making them economical to rear? Anyone have any info?

In my closest LFS (Old Orchard Aquarium) I believe they are getting $17.99 for WC Peps, and $18.99 for the ORA Captive Bred. I want to say at another shop it was something like $11.99 for Captive Bred Peps. In both cases, the size of the body is maybe 1" in TL, head to tail, minus antennae.

I wonder if c.b. peps will die as easily as w.c. ones

I know for cleaners & blood shrimps, wild shipments can have as high as 50% DOA (or within a week death), so making their landing cost expensive.

I can mention that when importing Wild L. amboinensis, as many as 100% were DOA, or very close to it, when arriving. Often times we simply had to cut and dump all the shrimp into tanks and see who sprung back to life and who was still "dead" the next day...typically 50% didn't revive.

FWIW,
