little shrimp running all over my larvae tank with just a few still in the planktonic stage. not sure how long it will take for the rest to settle or if they ever will, Some of them are still very small so maybe they need to grow up a little before they settle or maybe that are not very healthy and never will. I think I will wait and see what happens before I take the tank down for cleaning.

you will normally get some predation around moulting time when there shell is at its weakest.

You can mitigate it by providing plenty of hidey holes for the shrimp, I usually throw in a bunch of short PVC pipe pieces which seems to have reduced the predation for my shrimp.

they will be in a tank with live rock so there should be plenty of hiding places

Any more updates? I have some peps in my rbta farm and they are shedding eggs like crazy. So I have decided to set up their own larval tank and get going that way. A quick question that I think that you answered before but are you using a larval catcher or just catching them while they hatch? I am on the list for a larval catcher from chad vossen so hopefully I can get going soon and stop wasting all these larvae!

I just saw the post that said that you have a larval catcher..nevermind :P

yes I use a larvae catcher make with a pop bottle and PVC from the book Train Your Shrimp, works very well. I use a little LED reading like that you can get at any book store fore the light source

I will have to look into getting that book. My shrimp are breeding like crazy in my rose bubble tank.

Traps are really easy to build. Here's a discussion about them. http://www.marinebreeder.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=499&hilit=larval+trap

There is also the ones that user Chad Vossen is selling. A very good value, in my opinion. Please see: viewtopic.php?f=232&t=7104&p=73835#p73835

not sure what happened yesterday but I lost some of my young shrimp. The water was cloudy so I am assuming that I had a filter go bad. They are in a stand alone tank with a heater and sponge filter to I changed some of the water and now every thing seems to be alright. almost 4 weeks old now and seem to be growing well so maybe in another month or 2 they will start spawning. It will be nice to have completed my first challange.

just an update on my shrimp. they have grown up and are now a little over an inch in size so everything seems to be going well. I havn't really done much with them other then feed and clean but I have heard that they can start spawning when about 2 months after metamorphosis so I am thinking of setting up my Larvae catcher and see what happens.

I found a shed in my tank this morning so will be setting up a larvae catcher to see if I can get some larvae. this will be a big moment for me if I can get it done, my first complete life cycle for a marine species. I have already started to think about my next project, pipefish or firefish

great job jolson !
ive got some producing larvae at 3 months ...
i paused for a bit for system up grade and all is going as planned .
do you have any source of carbonates in the broodstock tank ? i have found that bare bottom tanks with internal filtrations bio filter seems to fail with out a source of carbonates . ive been adding a filter sock full of aragonite to mine and seems to help.

I keep some live rock in with them as shelter and as a bio filter so I would think that would be some kind of a carbonate source if you look at some of my pictures you can see it

nothing yet but I have missed a few night when I didnt get the catcher set up and running so I am planning on letting it run 24/7 for a month and see if I just missed the spawn, or maybe it is still to early.

you ARE turning off all your pumps arn't you? (I know dumb questions but.....)

also what micron screen have you got on your snagger? I've found that 120um screen clogs after about 3 days of constant use.

is water being drawn into the snagger? if not its eaither the screen or you don't have enough 'up welling' to bring water inot the body of teh snagger.

I only use a sponge filter so that not the problem and I think I used 150um mirco in the snagger. I can see a flow of water entering the snagger so its working OK . The shrimp are approx 4 months old so they should be spawning regularly. I will be out of the country for 3 wk and will have my daughter taking care of my tanks which she has done before but not for so long. I hope that everly thing goes OK but I am nervous. assmuing everly thing lives I will start again when I get back.

I think the ONLY thing to do is to be there when it happens to observe just what teh snagger is or is not doing.

How many adult shrimp are in teh tank?

well PaulG may have been correct I notice a litle scum at the top of the catcher so I did a little checking and there wasnt much flow. So I cleaned the screen and notice an immediate increase in flow in the snagger so that may be why I havent caught anything. two bad I need to shut it down while I am gone for a while.

back from vacation and have set up my snagger again, everything made it alright but they may need a little time to feed and build up some strength since they were on a minimum feeding schedule while I was gone just to help prevent any problems that might occure because of over feeding

well I may have found the problem, I never replace the heater in this tank and I found the water today was 66 F. I am guessing that the water temp has been too low since I have been trying to get my peps to spawn. I have put a new heater in and am slowly raising the temp up and think that this should solve my problem. I have a temp gauge in the tank but its one of those liquid crystal ones and its hard to read, I have been looking at it from a downward angle and I guess that you need to look straight at them or they dont read correctly
