Blu Legged Hermit Crab (Clibanarius sp.) Larvae Breeding Log

Postby Netra » Tue Oct 13, 2009 9:53 am

Hello everyone, it’s my first time with the breeding experience. I tryed to catch perpermint larvae but I got BH larvae (Clibanarius, ble legged hermit crab). I discovered my error only after one week so I continued with BH larvae. The first days, the water was not ready and my water temperature was between 70 and 90. BBS was not ready. I made several errors the first weeks. I got my first megalope at 28th day. I use a kreisel inside a little aquarium with heater, live rock and a stoneair inside the aquarium. Everyday I added RO/Di water for the evaporation.

I lost many larvae the first days but I dont know if the problem was the temperature or a hole I found inside my system. Several larvae found the hole and I lost them in the live rock. Between the glass of the aquarium and the plastic of my kreisel there was some holes. I put silicone all around the kreisel in my second system. I will post pictures tonight.

BTW i’m sorry for my english, i try to do my best. I speak french.

With the first spwan, I got only 1 BH. He’s so cute inside his little shell.

With the second spawn, I got megalopes at day 22. I’m now at day 25 with 21 megalopes and over 50 larvae.

Here we got with the log :

For a first try, it’s better than nothing. I never added and adult in the kreisel.

Netra,Ça c´est vraiment etonnent que tu ne parle pas lánglais! I know quebecois prefer to speak French, and that many even dislike using English, but Canadian people unable to use English sounds so weird to me!
Perhaps you could help us with French in the translation team?

You are doing very well with your hermits!.Check here, not many people are raising them.and you say you´re a beginner!
When you will be able to raise hundreds, you will face the problem of providing so many tiny shells.
Could you describe your kreisel or perhaps post a picture of it?

Hello Luis, do you know a good web site to post a picture??

Tiny shells are not a problem. I buyed a bag with over 15 000 shells between 1/4 and 1 inch and I found many shells under 1/4 like 2-3mm.
Dont forget, we are over 6 000 000 and over 80% of the population speak french. The major problem is the practice.

If you want help with traduction, yes I can help! I will do my best!

I will try to raise undread BH but I want to try shrimp at the same time. I will get peppermint larvae between 16-20 october.
After, peppermint, I will try porcelain crabs. I love trying to breed crustacean. It's really funny.

Ok, my system is this one : Image
I use 4 DIY kreisels like this one. We can see the larvae inside. With the last batch I got overs 30 megalopes. I'm looking at the moment for the cue. I added shells. I got only 1 BH with this cue. In the next days I will try to add sediment, 1 adult and water from my mature system inside my megalope bac. The megalopes are not inside the kreseil. I moved them inside a plactic bac. I found a good documentation on the web.

http://www.int-res.com/articles/meps/141/m141p027.pdf

With the last batch, I got all megalopes between 22 et 25 days.

great job, could you describe how you got the crabs to spawn and did you use a larvae catcher to collect them. Also what conditions were you keeping them before they spawned. do you have a web site where you buy the shells that sound like a really good price. keep posting I will be interested in this. I have spawned peppermint shrimp but not crabs.

Hello Jolson, I got my shells from shellhorizons.com like those one :
http://www.shellhorizons.com/details.as ... -10&Page=1
they are ¼ inch up but lot of them are under ¼.

Every spawn I catched was an error. I was trying to catch peppermint larvaes with a larvae catcher. I got my first spawn in august, my second spawn at end of septembre, my third spawn at the beggining of october and my last spawn at the end of october. With my last spawn, I got over 50 BH. :D A real success for me. Since october 2009, nothing.
All the BH are inside my nano 20g. When I watch TV, I watch my nano too. The nano is 3 feet on the side of my TV. Last week I seen my bangaii eating something under the moonlight. It’s was the first spawn since october 2009. The first spawn I seen. Thery all ended in the mounth of my bangaii. Free food :D

The size of larve is 2-3 mm.
The spawn of yesterday was huge, over 250 but I dont know how many, my powerhead was on.
My pair of bangaii was eating the larvae at 8:30 p.m. and was eating again at 3:30 a.m.

Another spawn yesterday. Maybe over 250 larvae. I count only 8 BH and I dont know how many male/female. I dont how to sex them and if it's possible.
Does anybody know if the BH reproduces only a time by years?
I did not see larva since October 2009 and I saw 3 hatch in September.
I thought that all the femeles had died.

any updates, did you try to save any this time. I have a question on your kreisel, is there mesh in the hole in the back I cant tell and I see you use air to drive the water, how is that working and have you ever tried a water driven one.

Hello Jolson, the mesh is a weed blocker, the color of weed blocker is black! Yes I used air pump and never tryed water pump. I did'nt seen a new hacth since the last one and I spend all my time on my pipefish fry. I'm not sure but I think they breed only one time by year, after the summer. I'm going to continue to watch them.

you haven't talked about the system you have the BLHs is but it sounds like you have them in with some peppermint shrimp and Bangaii. How may BLHs do you have in there and what are the conditions that you keep them in and what type of filtration.

It'a 20G with 2 koralia nano, skimmer, heater and PC light. Over 20 pounds of LR. A pair of bangaii, 1 cleaner shrimp, some snails, 2 purple porcelain crabs (both female) and 8 or 10 BLHC.
The temp is about 78-80F. No ammonia, nitrite or nitrate.
I change 5G every weeks.

Since the breeding challenge is not on hermit I decided to try them again for a personnal challenge. I count only 8 BH in my 20 gallons. 2 of them are very big, maybe 3 times the size of normal BH. Both are my female. They spawn every 14-17 days with over 500 frys every time. I'm working with 2 batch at the moment and only 100 larvaes/batch. They are in plastic container, maybe 2.5-3G. I feed them NHBBS only 1 days every 4 days. The other 3 days, I dont feed them. They eat the BBS in the system. No filtration, no water change. The first batch is 17 days old today. I lost maybe 10 larvaes, no more. The bottom of the container is brown, full of junks. They seem to eat the junks too. They are not really hard to work. They will start to morph in 10-13 days.
