water depth

I have heard jawfish prefer deeper tanks of 18" or greater water height for breeding. can anyone support or disprove this theory?

pearly spawn today

Postby rghouse » Thu Mar 06, 2008 8:07 pm

I have a pair of pearly jawfish from the keys. I have had them a year and the male is finally holding eggs. They were housed in a 40 breeder but with the thick layer of sand it wasnt enough room for courting. They have been in a tall tank for about 6 months now. 4-6" course sand/rubble and ~16" head room.

male actually has a larger belly than female. Female never actaully looked gravid to me. male is larger in general, eats more, and is more aggressive. eggs are larger than I would have guessed and are milky white with an orange shell.

Male displayed enlarged head, didnt eat. Positively id'd the spawn when he finally turned towrds me as I peered in. Incidentally these guys never ate when the actinics came on until recently. during "sundown", always in hole when under dimlight until 2-3 weeks ago.

hopefully he still has them tomorow...

Postby rghouse » Thu Mar 27, 2008 4:09 pm

well they are giving it their 3rd shot this time. the first two batches lasted 4 and 8 days. Yes, male sets eggs in hole while feeding. Lets hope they hang on this time...

In witts book it says they hatch after 7-9 days so your second one was probably a good hold. When mine spawned they didn't hold the eggs past three days and they haven't had another batch yet.
