FB's Gold Stripe Maroon (Premnas biaculeatus) Breeding Log

Postby FB » Wed Jan 28, 2009 2:16 pm

I am starting this log to track my progress breeding of Gold Stripe Maroon (Premnas biaculeatus).

I have one pair of GSM's breeding. Here is a list of clutches

Batch I - Discovered 01/13/2009 - Hatched 01/15/2009-01/16/2009. All died quickly. This nest was small.

Batch II - Discovered 01/19/2009 probably laid the night of 01/18/2009. Hatched - 01/24/2009 - 01/26/2009. This nest was double the first probalby 400. There were about 250-300 when they finally hatched. Currenlty 7-10 fish are still alive and eating rotifers. One has a curled tail already.

Batch III - laid 01/27/2009. I am expecting them to hatch 02/03/2009-02/04/2009

I have 4 larvae left. One has a distinct curled tail but I don't believe it was the same one as yesterday. I added more ammonia lock this morning as I didn't have time for a water change. I added a little more instant algae to the tank too green it up. BBS are bubbleing away and should be ready to feed tonight I hope. I have noticed that the larvae are not plump with rotifers just silver bellies. I have a feeling that they are not nutritious enough. Hopefully the bbs will push them to the next level.

One lonely GSM larvae left. He does not have a curled tail. He looked very slugish and skinny this morning. I did a 90% water change and he perked right up. I add more BBS but he did not seem interested. There were still a ton of rotifers in the tank even with the 90% water change.

GSM batch III is progressing however there seemed to be a lot of unfertalized eggs. Many white eggs still exist and many eggs have been cleaned up by the male.

Might want to work on the broodstock diet first if there are many unfertilize eggs.

I am guessing they are w.c. if they are GSM

Tonight is night 6 of batch IV, so I transfered the eggs to a 5 gallon tank. Added rots and some Rotifer Diet too tint the water green. With any luck tomorrow I will have some GSM larvae

Have not updated this thread in a while. I will try and keep it up to date.

Batch VII was laid down yesterday. Should pull the eggs on the 16th.

Batch VI larvae are 5 days old today. I was able to count at least 10 this morning as the water had cleared enough. I add about 15 - 20 bbs this morning although I did not see any of them eat it. I also added Oto A.

Pulled the eggs (Batch VII) on the 16th and none hatched the first night. On the 17th about 40% had hatched the remaining eggs were white.

I currently have about 10-20 @ 2 days eating rotifers.

Batch VI seemed to diappear on day 6. Any suggestions

Batch VII has only 2 left (day 7). Serveral times have I seen some with the kinked tail. Then the next day they are gone. This has happened for three straight days. They are being fed rots, bbs, and Oto A. However I have never seen any of them plump up on BBS like my Occ's did.

Does anybody have any suggstions on what to do to get over the hump.

Thanks
