And they all died, days 2 and 3,few remaining day 4. Seems clear that they don´t feed on rots.
Now I found a way to cheat my strong feeling against cuulling. I took 20 % of yesterday´s batch (which turned to be too much, anyway)for a rearing trial with copepods.
And the rest was moved to a natural mesocosm experimental system.
Or in other words,I dumped the poor fellows in an outside filthy wading pool where all the waste goes.Still, they at least have a chance. And I´m not flushing them down the drain!
FWIW the pool was full of good looking little larvae today. And salinity is 1.010 due to recent rainfall

 I have thought about putting some priolepis in my waste water too. Who knows it might just work.

Well, with this run (BRT 44),everything is not lost yet... :| Several larvae survive at day 8 and are showing growth.
Started last night BRT 45,with 20% of the hatch, lots of larvae.Same as BRT 44,except for IA NAN paste instead of live NAN.

25ºC=78ºF.
Typical damsel rearing;most die early at the same time (starvation?),and some few live till meta.

might consider cranking down those temps a notch, see if they can learn to feed before they run out of reserves? how are the ones outside doing?

Actually we had some coll days recently and the temp dropped a bit.The ones outside lasted one day, cold water,I guess.
I couldn´t find my BRT 44 today  Didn´t see the body either.

A new hatch last night.Again I put some in a BRT,this time with rots+ A.tonsa.

And I set 3 experimental jars as follows:
Volume:2 L,salin.:1.010.temp:25ºC(78ºF)aereation 1 bubble/sec.Light fluo.24hrs.Phyto:100 ml/day.Ten newly hatched larvae in each jar.
Jar copepods:given nauplii A.tonsa
Jar rots:given rotifers
Jar control:nothing given.

And the rest went to the pool.Warmer today. The pool was full of larvae! 8)

Didn´t see the body either.

Found it :( .Game over...

Day 2
BRT:looking well.
Outside:few larvae.Very few rots there.Dumping some live NAN to boost them...
Jars:All larvae remain active.
Pod and rot jars:full bellies (rots contaminated with some 1/3 grown bs  )
Control:empty bellies.

Day 2 pm.
Outside:no larvae found
BRT:Ok.
Jars-Control:larvae died,most floating.
Pods:doing fine
Rots:No larvae,just many (too many)rots and some growing bs.This was unexpected.I suspected O2 deprivation and checked pH.Control 8.3,pods 8.1 rots 7.7
This points to anoxia. This situation is the same we meet often when rots overpopulate the larval tanks.

Day 15.
Started with Otohime.
Larva is large and taller, with a dark pre-caudal area. The abdomen area is pink.Yesterday it turned all dark grey, and I imagined meta was coming...But no,later it was pink again!

Update:Meta!
Growth has been accelerating in the 2nd week,it is now about 1 cm.
Swimming pattern is now like a damsel, and it is getting darker and blotchy.
Today,at day 19,the dark precaudal area shows some orange colour.
So this is META. :D 8) A nice Xmas present to have this single larva survive and settle.
And good for MOFIB to end the year with a new first time species and genus.
This damsel presents therefore a good commercial promise,as it is very prolific, and has a short larval life with fast growing.

Dedicated to Amy,the first portraits of a captive raised Neoglyphidodon damsel ever 8)

Image

Image

The fish at 60 dah,is amazingly 25 mm =1" TL.
It was moved to a system tank for grow out.Though it is already in commercial size, perfect for a nanno reef.
So this damsel is really interesting for commercial breeders,if we manage to raise large numbers of them.

Oh Luis :D
First let me say this is my first post from my new apple computer so if I mess this up somehow you'll know what happened. You guys should know by now that i suck with computers, cameras, microscopes, you get the idea  I had to take time out from looking at eel eggs under my new microscope to post about these fine sexy pics. :D Hopefully I'll get something cool to show you soon too but it is so much to learn in three days.

Now back to you and these cute little fish. I say this all the time (I seem to be the queen of shout outs lately  ) but you rock sweetie. I mean this so much. I'm so proud of you :!: I know how hard these guys are and yet you are now just rocking through these itches. GO BABY GO :!: And fwiw this is your best yet to me.

Amy

P.S. What's next ?
