Clownfish fry over eating?

Clownfish fry over eating?

Postby Heisenberg » Sat Jul 27, 2013 8:44 pm

Is this possible?
I had a good hatch and they were all eating rotifers up until day 4, when suddenly most of them died. I took the dead ones out and each ones belly has exploded.
Now, the last clowns that are alive are at the top of the water gasping.

Any ideas? Thanks

Did you test Nitrate and Amonia?
How do you raise the fry? Co-culture with phyto?

I´ve found that feedeng them twice a day with enriched rotifers is enought. Fry consume rotifers in a few hours. If you feed a lot rotifers will be eaten with empty bellies providing no energy to the fry.

I feed my rotifers RG complete.
I have great numbers and success with this.
I raised the fry in a ten gallon, blacked out and white bottom. Airline and heater.
I greened the water a little and feed rotifers. They have a constant supply of rotifers.
Ammonia badge always stayed in the yellow.
Haven't tested for nitrates

Sounds like you are doing things well. You just have to fine tune things. How much water are you starting out with? I use 8-9 gallons and its a nice buffer. The ammonia badge is a nice fail safe to have but in my experience they are not very accurate. I prefer to test for ammonia with a regular test kit. You will get more accurate readings and can determine if ammonia is the cause of the deaths.
Try and feed just enough rotifers so the larvea eat most of them in a few hours. You can overfeed them and you want to avoid that. Also try and use a syringe when you dose the water to tint it. This way you can guage how much RG Complete you are using and can adjust to suit your needs. Good luck with your next batch.

3 of the survivors have stripes! I'm so excited!
Have you had success switching to cylopeeze instead of live brine or should I hatch some?

Congrats!! I don't use live brine shrimp or cylopeeze on larvae at all. I use rotifers and TDO-A thru TDO-C. Let me know if you have any questions.
