Orchid Dottyback large abdomen

Orchid Dottyback large abdomen

Postby JimWelsh » Fri Jul 16, 2010 11:30 pm

My wife and I have a single Orchid Dottyback that we've had for almost 4 years now. She has been living in our seahorse tank, and eating the things seahorses eat (Frozen Mysis, PE and other brands, too sometimes enriched with Selcon or other HUFA boosters, plus enriched frozen brine shrimp are the staples). She has always been very shy and secretive, and spends most of her time in her various caves. (We just call her a she -- we don't know). For the last few days, she hasn't been eating. Interested at feeding time, but not coming out to get the food. I examined her tonight, and the only thing I notice is that she has a mildly extended abdomen (see picture). Anybody have any idea what might be wrong with her, and what is there that we can do about it, please? Does this look like fatty liver disease?

the pic isnt the greatest for looking, but it doesnt look like a large abdomen for an adult dottyback to me.

Hard to tell much from the pic, considering how old 'he' (I say he as a single dottyback on its own would have turned male by now) is however the fact he isn't showing interest in food & has an extended abdomen doesn't sound too good.

How long had it been since he ate before the pic was taken?

my male orchid doesn't exactly go nuts for food like the demales do but he will come out & pic at a few pieces at his leasuire.

It has been only about 3 days now since he ate. Does anybody know the normal life span of these fish?

Unless he is finding food elsewhere in the tank, haveing belly like that after 3 days is definatly a sign of something wrong.

As far as their lifespan.... I have no idea.
