The Marine Ornamental Fish and Invertebrate Breeders Organization began on 10 November 2006, when the domain marinebreeder.com was first acquired. A small group of breeders soon formed, working together to provide a platform for the exchange of information about the captive breeding of marine ornamental fish and invertebrates. Membership grew rapidly, as well as the desire to have a more formal platform for the exchange of information. To that end, MOFIB (Marine Ornamental Fish and Invertebrate Breeders) was officially born as a Not-for-Profit organization in the state of Illinois, US, on 11 June 2008.
Since that time MOFIB's size, scope and information has expanded to become a breeder's advocate and the largest resource for the marine breeding community. "MOFIB's" mission is to increase the production, variety, quality and availability of captive bred marine fish and invertebrates by sharing and fostering advancement in the innovation, art, and science of marine fish and invertebrate breeding. The idea "it only takes one" is the first movement in changing the face of how marine ornamental animals are procured, encouraging every hobbyist worldwide to take an interest in breeding and supporting their hobby.
MOFIB is incorporated as an Illinois Not-For-Profit corporation. Donations are welcome and encouraged. Donations can be monetary or consist of assistance, resources, and expertise. All members at each level of membership are encouraged to document their experiences via the web portal, therefore increasing the overall knowledge base of marine breeding. By doing so, each member helps to further the movement and increase information available in an otherwise largely unresearched effort.
MOFIB's current Board of Directors includes Dr. Andrew Rhyne (President), Dr. John Lauth (treasurer), Vince Rado (Vice President), Suzy Applegarth (Secretary), William Heaton and Jeff Cockran.
Are you ready to breed a more vibrant, healthy hobby?
We believe by improving, growing, and centralizing the world's Marine Breeding Community, Saltwater Fish & Invert Breeding Information, and Captive Bred Fish & Invertebrate Marketplace, we foster innovation and cooperation. This knowledge will ultimately help to preserve and conserve the wild reefs that currently provide the vast majority of the life we keep in the marine / saltwater aquarium hobby. It is up to us all to be the change we envision in our world and MOFIB is your information portal to captive rearing. So if you are ready, we welcome Marine Breeders from all backgrounds and all countries, whether first time spawners just thinking about breeding or those who run commercial hatcheries.
